Voice Mail Instructions: These tell me how I can call in to the church phone system remotely to manage my mailbox, listen to my messages, change the answering system, and perform other tasks as needed - especially in the event of a snowstorm.
A Preacher's Decalogue: This is a list of "ten commandments" (really exhortations) by Sinclair Ferguson to fellow preachers. Here they are, in summation:
- Get to know your Bible better.
- Be a man of prayer.
- Don't lose sight of Christ.
- Be more deeply Trinitarian (i.e. give proper attention to and appreciation for all three Persons of the Godhead).
- Use you imagination.
- Speak much of sin and grace.
- Use "the plain style" (i.e. speak with simplicity, not sophistication).
- Find your own voice.
- Learn how to transition.
- Love your people.
Ten Accountability Questions: These are questions that a Christian can ask of him/herself or that close Christian friends can ask of one another. It's simply one means of accountability, provided that these questions take place in the context of sincere love and humility, with a desire to build one another up in the Lord. Here are the questions:
- How often have you spent time in the Bible and prayer this week?
- What have you done this week to spend quality, relational time with your family?
- What did you do this week to maintain your joy in spite of life's daily circumstances?
- What did you do this week to take care of your body (exercise, diet, and rest)?
- What steps have you taken this week to guard yourself against lustful thoughts, actions, and/or materials?
- How have you shaded the truth this week to make yourself look better to others?
- How did you give your best this week (at work, school, etc.)?
- In what ways have you been above reproach in financial matters this week?
- Who have you shared your faith (the Gospel) with this past week?
- Have you answered these questions truthfully?
A Pyromaniacs Decal: Don't worry, I'm not some sort of crazy fire-starter! This decal is from a website (blogspot) that features a lot of good reading material on theology, church life, and more.
- Promote authentic worship
- Increase corporate prayer
- Strengthen local evangelism
- Institute annual conference
- Upgrade church website
- Revamp missions ministry
- Attend to property/facility needs
A Note from My Son: This is without question my favorite item on the board. It's a note that one of my children wrote to me more than two years ago. It reads:
Dear Dad,You are kind to me. You teach me about basketball, church, and paying attention to my teachers. I like when you let me drive the lawn-mower tractor around. You are a good dad!Love,Ethan
What's on your bulletin board?
On my bulletin board, in the order of my preference:
ReplyDelete* Two buttons, both from Cupcake Royale -- one of them says, "I'm pro-cupcake, AND I VOTE" (Google Cupcake Royale :)
* The BEST calendar ever:2009 Wall Art Calendar from the Paper Source -- it cost me $25 or $30 in the middle of January! But it has killer graphics and each page can be reused as a file folder or gift box which really appeals to my crafty side.
* Notes on some fund changes that will affect some variable annuity fund performance that I have to calculate -- it's super important to get it right so that the calculations will be SEC compliant, so I don't want to lose those notes!
* A page that shows the file layout of a flat data extract we get from the main frame. Here's a section of it -- each character means something, and I get to figure it out: ...BB1XX030101000000057872{000000038044E000000070014CQMAI...
* A small orange card with names, phone numbers, email addresses and main frame IDs of 15 of my coworkers. It's titled, "Usual Suspects List" and it's as of 08/18/2008.
For those that know me -- believe it or not, that's it!
I actually have only five items on the small bulletin board supplied to me at work. From right to left:
ReplyDelete1) I have a small invitation to Raytheon's Veteran's Day Observance Ceremony (from last year)
2) A simple diagram of my program's land/space communication signalling process
3) A top-down chart of the software make-up of the program I am working on
4) A folder to contain the small noteboot I use to account for each hour I spend at work.
5) Most important and my favorite - an 11X17 laminated sheet with a white-clouded sky background, that contains in large bold print the verses of Philippians 4:4-9
I have on the three walls surrounding my desk (neatly hung by the Raytheon maintenance dept) a series of plaques, pictures, and many awards I have received. Contrary to what some may think, these are not hung there to impress others. But rather to remind me (when I am overwhelmed and think that I just can't do the work that lies before me - which is quite often) that I just need to pray and hand it over to the Lord. I look about me and see all that He has accomplished through this simple-minded, inferior, inadequate, and helpless man that lies before Him. This comforts me and humbles me to tears.
Glen, you are the rare combination of a true C++ programmer who is also humble.
