While catching up on the news, I came across a headline that read "Obama: Stimulus Bill 'Major Milestone' for Economic Recovery." But when I first glanced at the headline, I thought it read "Obama: Stimulus Bill 'Major Millstone' for Economic Recovery." Clearly, some see the stimulus bill as a major milestone, whereas others see it as a major millstone! Without a doubt, the passage of this legislation was a major victory for President Obama. The economic stimulus is a 787 billion-dollar package that Obama says will "put people back to work doing the work America needs done." Senator Max Baucus, a Montana Democrat, who was a leading architect of the proposal, said that the stimulus package "will create millions of good-paying jobs and help families and business stay afloat financially." Yet a virtually opposite prediction was voiced by Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell, who said, "A stimulus bill that was supposed to be timely, targeted and temporary is none of the above."
So there you have the contrasting opinions of the powers that be. What's your opinion?
There is no evidence from history that a spending plan has spurred the recovery of the economy from recession or depression. FDR's new deal never got unemployment below 20%, only WWII was able to do that.
ReplyDeleteSo it's a millsone in my opinion.

It will cause way too much in the way of budget deficits, printing of money, and bureaucracy. this is a giant millstone

There will probably some marginal improvement 6 months from now, not because of the stimulus package, but because this is a typical time period for America to start to emerge from a recession.
ReplyDeleteIt's interesting to me that Republicans had to lose an election to return to conservative principles.
Funny you should use the term "Millstone". That is the same term Jesus used in Matthew 18:6
ReplyDelete"But if anyone causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin, it would be better for him to have a large millstone hung around his neck and to be drowned in the depths of the sea."
I haven't had the time to investigate it myself, but from Christian programs on WEZE, there is a strong belief that a huge sum of that money will be going to Planned Parenthood and other abortion organizations. That should not surprise us considering the agenda of our president.
The reference to Millstone I am refering to is that placing this money into the abortion industry will be used for advertising and encouraging young girls in America (even many Christian girls) to decide to have their child killed. This would be causing them to sin, thus this Stimulus Package is at least in part a Stimulus for Abortions. This event is definitely a huge Millstone of Sorrow weighing heavy on my heart!
It is obvious to anyone who reads the details that this is a spending bill that incorporates much if not all of the pork the Democrats couldn't get through when Bush was president.
ReplyDeleteHow many people will be put to work with the $30 million going to study the saltmarsh mouse in the San Francisco area. Nancy Pelosi has been trying to push through for the last 8 years. This is just one example among many of wasteful spending.
Today I saw a review of the cost ramifications of this bill. The lowest estimated cost per family in the US is $27,000.
This is a very expensive millstone that our children will inherit.
There is a good rule of thumb when buying anything of substantial cost--never make a rushed decision to purchase. Anyone making you feel like you have to buy it now has always raised suspicion with me.
ReplyDeleteWhether a car, a home, the latest TV/electronic gadget or even the SHAM-WOW—the salesmen all hope to illicit in the buyer a sense of urgency so great that the potential buyer is left feeling like he MUST have the product NOW because he NEEDS it. They are impulse buys and they are rarely prudent.
The stimulus bill is the single greatest financial burden this country has ever seen, yet Obama, the House, and the Senate, signed it into law after only a month of deliberation—and with virtually no bipartisan support. No one is even sure what is in it! Over the next few weeks and months we will discover together just how much of our money will be wasted on useless government programs which serve to increase our budget deficit and decrease the value of the dollar. Such programs will not stimulate anything except an addiction to government.
Yes, my friends, this is a millstone and it will only serve to further deepen the recession or, at best, prolong it.

Of course all this viewpoints are from our human perspective, and we can't see things the way God can, who happens to be in control.
ReplyDeleteI don't know, but it may be the case that a nation that makes it legal to murder babies wholesale, redefines marriage, takes prayer out of schools, and then goes to the ballpark to sing "God Bless America" may find instead that things aren't going to work out so well.
